Days of Creation

This series of prints were the final project in a course I took which explored alternative historical processes. In this course, I discovered a process that has become one of my favourite image-making methods to this day: cyanotype toning. With a variety of natural toners such as teas, coffee, wine tannin, as well as sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide treatments, bright-blue cyanotype prints transform into a range of browns, yellows, reds, purples, and greys.

The images in this 6-part series illustrate the 6 days of the world’s creation as described in the Judeo-Christian worldview. In this story, each day is devoted to different elements of the earth: light, waters and sky, moons and stars, land and plants, and animals and man.

The hands-on historical process of making cyanotypes resonates with God’s creation of the world. As an artist, I reflect God’s character by creating.
